Background of the Study
Bauchi State is home to several tourist attractions, including the Yankari Game Reserve, the Sumu Wildlife Park, and the Marshall Caves. Tourism contributes significantly to the state’s economy, generating employment and revenue. However, the industry is susceptible to risks such as natural disasters, security concerns, and operational disruptions, which can result in substantial financial losses.
Tourism insurance offers a critical mechanism for mitigating these risks by providing financial protection and fostering resilience among tourism operators. Despite its potential, the adoption of tourism insurance in Bauchi State remains limited, with many stakeholders unaware of its benefits or deterred by perceived costs. A recent report by Nnamdi and Abdullahi (2024) revealed that only 15% of tourism businesses in Bauchi State had active insurance coverage, highlighting the need for greater awareness and adoption.
This study aims to explore the role of tourism insurance in mitigating industry losses in Bauchi State, offering recommendations to increase its utilization and effectiveness.
